Aztecs capture title for two straight years

By Reno Del Toro

For two straight years, the Aztec football team captured the district championship and finished with style. They finished the season with an 8-2 (6-1 in district) record, proving they can’t be stopped heading into the playoffs. El Dorado came into the season with a new head coach in Ruben Torres and changes in staff and strategy. Critics were unsure if the team would find continued success – and were proven wrong.

Superintendent Dr. Jose Espinoza presented the trophy to the team, administrators and coaches in the lobby this morning.

“It’s special,” Torres said. “I’m very proud of accomplishing that in my first season in El Dorado.”

For the school district, team SISD has a total of three teams making the playoffs this year. The Montwood Rams and Americas Trail Blazers will join El Dorado in the post season. On top of that they all share the district title for 1-6A. Junior Cameron Hill remembers last year’s title that his brother Austyn Hill won with the Aztecs.

“Last year I didn’t do much but, this year I contributed just a little bit more,” Hill said. “ It feels good to step up in my brother’s shoes.”

The Aztecs will play at 7 p.m. on Thursday against Midland High at the SAC.

“It’s going to be a fun and tough game for our guys but, hopefully things will play out in our favor,” said Torres, excited for the playoffs.
