In the zone, the varsity baseball team took on the Franklin Cougars and Montwood Rams Feb. 21 for the SISD Tournament. Junior pitcher Oscar Ramirez stood on the mound ready to throw the tournament’s starting pitch and the dugout went wild.

“I was on the edge of my seat by the end of the game because Franklin was in the lead,” senior Austin Serrano said.

In a three-day long tournament, the Varsity Aztec boys started off the first game on a good note, going against Franklin. It was a tight game between the Aztecs and the Cougars as they battled it out through each inning, winning 11-5 over Franklin.

“It was my first time pitching an entire game, I played my heart out that game and it showed because we won,” Ramirez said.

After their big win against the Cougars, the Aztecs were ready to take on the Montwood Rams. With the recent move to 2-5A, the Aztecs would not have another opportunity to play Montwood this season. According to senior Andrew Torres, the team couldn’t wait to play their rival once again.

“It felt good knowing we beat a 1-6A team still being a 2-5A school,” Torres said.

After winning both games against the 6A schools the boys were excited to take home these two wins and the start to a great season.

“The coaches were proud that we played our hearts out and worked as a team on the field,” Torres said.
