This week, the El Dorado Aztecs went to visit the Midland Lee Rebels in another colossal showdown. After an amazing game last year, which ended in a double-overtime win by the Aztecs, the Rebels were looking to exact revenge this time around at home.
The Aztec offense got out to a moderate start, going on a 22-play drive, ending in a field goal. With limited depth, new changes to the offensive line were made. Former linebacker, junior Ernie Espinoza, got the start at left tackle, and junior Felipe Quintero got the start at left guard.
The rest of the half, the Aztecs struggled to generate any offense, with multiple penalties, two interceptions, and only converting five of nine third-down attempts.
The defense had its ups and downs. They struggled in the run game, allowing five touchdowns on the ground, but managed to cause two turnovers, one fumble recovery, and an interception return for a touchdown.
The Aztecs were able to score in the final minutes of the fourth quarter, but still lost 35-16.
The Aztecs look to move on to Coronado High School, whom they lost to last year in a stunning overtime upset. The attitude and focus definitely will change. Not only will it be their homecoming game, it will also be their first game in district play.
