Students excitedly talk to one another, each sketching their own projects. From anime to cartoons to full portraits, a variety of art can be found in Allison Vega’s art class. Each of her students work hard for competition to just simple art pieces for personal enjoyment. Art fills Vega’s classroom, creating a welcoming environment for all students.
Many of Vega’s students enjoy creating pieces in her class, having freedom of choice in expression. Creating an environment full of opportunity all while Vega continues to do the career she loves.
“I had a good art teacher in my senior year of high school. I saw how much fun she had doing it so it made me want to do the same,” Vega said “I chose to teach high school art because it allows for more advanced work whereas in elementary, you have to teach kids the basics.”
Vega has been making art for years, allowing her to pass down advice to growing artists. Not only giving recommendations, but also allowing students to have a creative mind and to de-stress.
“After school I used to go over to my grandparents house to keep me from being bored. They bought a bunch of art supplies and let me make art in their spare room,” Vega said. “At first, I would draw to just get better but once I gained improvement, I started drawing for relaxation.”
With endless opportunities for creation, senior Vianca Illiana’s nerves are put to ease knowing she has Vega’s support.
“I started taking Ms. Vega’s class during sophomore year and at first, I felt nervous in a new class, but once she asked about my art and started conversations, I felt more comfortable and free to create without being so closed off to one idea,” senior Vianca Illiana said.
Having a teacher passionate about their subject can make the learning environment more welcome to students. IIIiana believes that having Vega as her teacher makes her at ease to complete her pieces.
“Right now I’m taking two art classes with Ms. Vega and I enjoy them a lot because I have free time during school to relax and draw for two hours while also having a talkative and passionate teacher to help me,” Illiana said.
