Swimmers headed for regional competition

The district 1-6A championship meet was held at the Socorro Student Activities Complex on Jan. 20. It was a make-it-or-break-it point for swimmers looking to dive into a top spot at regionals.

The Aztecs had 11 swimmers qualify for regionals, going beyond the boundaries of the competitiveness in the water.

On the boys relay team, seniors Rafael Villanueva, Matthew Wilder-Welch, Luis Martinez and Alejandro Mendoza all qualified to race some of the best relays around.

The girls team produced the other seven athletes that qualified as well. Camila Douglas, Sara Morales, Mryanda Castillo, Athziry Hernandez, Aixarret Hernandez, Cynthia Morales, and Ximena Varela are all moving on to the next level. Many of those swimmers are making their second appearance at regionals.

This will be senior team captain Rafael Villanueva’s first regional meet out of the past four years he has been on varsity.

“It’s breathtaking and shows all the hard work I’ve put in has paid off,” said Villanueva. “The competition is going to be tough, but we’re going to work hard every single day, not give up and not be scared of anyone there.

The Aztecs will be in Lubbock, Texas on Feb. 3-4 and fight for a chance to go to the upcoming state meet.
