NFL Roundup: The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

By Lorenzino Estrada

It’s December.

That time of year when teams make or break their season, where divisions are won, bye weeks are clinched, and plays are made. As usual, in a very eventful NFL season, the stakes are high.

The Dallas Cowboys are the first team to punch their ticket to the playoffs, after their 17-15 win against the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday Night Football, and after the Washington Redskins 31-23 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. With the Cowboys being the hottest team in the league right now, everyone else in the NFC is just trying to make the playoffs.

After a big win from the Seahawks on prime time football, it seems like they’re also hitting their stride at the right time, having a very safe lead in their division, while things in the NFC South continue to tighten up.

With the Atlanta Falcons dropping their game in the final minute against the Chiefs, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers stealing a road win against the San Diego Chargers, it will be a very interesting finale to the season for both teams who are trying to win their respected division. The Detroit Lions were also able to steal a road win against the New Orleans Saints, proving to many people in the league that they are a sleeper team who is currently winning their division. Teams like the Green Bay Packers, Washington Redskins and Minnesota Vikings are currently in the hunt for the final Wild Card spots.

What could be considered the toughest division in the NFL, the AFC West continues to provide excellent reality TV. The current division leading Oakland Raiders rallied in the fourth quarter, scoring 29 points to take away a win from the Buffalo Bills, who are currently hunting for a playoff spot. But the Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs aren’t letting the Raiders run away, winning their games on the road.

With the Baltimore Ravens halting the hot Miami Dolphins, they continue to hold first place in their division, with the Steelers right behind them. New England and Houston both hold safe division leads. With only four weeks left in the season, the AFC Wild Card race is all over the place, with the Dolphins, Bills, Steelers and Tennessee Titans all vying for a spot.

But with many teams that all still have their playoff hopes alive, there’s the unlucky bunch that do not. That group includes the Cleveland Browns, San Francisco 49ers and Jacksonville Jaguars, all who are now fighting for the best picks in the upcoming 2017 NFL Draft.

Player of the Week: Tom Brady, 33-46 for 269 yards and a touchdown. Also earning win number 201, surpassing Peyton Manning for most career wins.
